Ironic that an Eco-messaged cartoon has the most corporate sponsors of any movie this year, including several for SUVs. 30-something hipsters are an incredibly easy demographic to market to.

Sorry if my other posts have sounded too negative. I disagree with some points, but I think much of it is quite brilliant, and has been touched on (but in far less detail) elksewhere. The study of mirrors, etc. are brilliant.

That steadicam shot of Willis walking through the "enemy camp" was the moment at which I realized what a brilliant film Pulp Fiction really was. Dead on analysis.

@blueinmo I know. I was cracking a joke about a previous comment that called the song a metaphor.

No personal offense meant, but the more I read about the hidden audio and symbolism in Kubrick's films, particularly this one, the more I'm convinced that both Kubrick and many of his fans were obsessed nutters.

@robag88 Wish I could help you there. I saw it years ago in a graphic design magazine article about the history of photo manipulation. It had the before and after shot and a description of the pre-computer process used to replace the waiter's head.

@cudacade I see you've seen Rob Ager's bizarre, sometimes illogical doc, but just because Kubrick might have slipped in a few references to a subject he was obsessed with doesn't mean that that was what the movie was ABOUT. Directors and their dozens of crew members work little bizarre references...

Coasts by on the nostalgia - some definite funny moments, but I got pretty bored in the second half. Quite possibly the first children's movie made exclusively for people over 30 (or was that "Where The Wild Things Are"?).

America's preoccupied with sex says the guy spending tons of money to elect the candidate obsessed with controlling our sex lives and suppressing people because of who they choose to have sex with.

I was kind of surprised when I finally heard deadmau5. I guess I expects something a bit groundbreaking. Some of it sounds just like gay club music from the 90s...the rest like The Prodigy. Just an observation, not an insult.

Just about all action movies from the 70s/80s, and a great many of the horror movies too (The Thing comes to mind), are Vietnam parables or involve characters traumatized by similar intentionally situations.

@LMNerd Exactly - a directional device, NOT a corpse. People read WAY too much into Kubrick's movies sometimes.

I find this analysis fascinating, but there's a lot in the movie that is intentionally misleading and ambiguous. The best thing about the ending is it's ambiguousness. Some things just don't have answers, and don't need them.

It seems to me that the lack of clothing change is to help us decipher which characters are which. This is common in films where it is easy to confuse characters, and The Thing needs as much distinction between characters as it can get, since character development is minimal.

Kubrick treated this movie more like painting and opera than film. It's not really a film in the classic OR modern sense. The slowness, bizarre music, repetitious sound-effects, & huge image (when seen as intended, on the big screen) are all meant to put the viewer into a sort-of trance. People d...

Been listening to "White Magic", Steve Kilbey's newest side project, from 2011. Pretty incredible album - probably his best since The Church's Priest=Aura almost 20 years ago.

Makes me miss the ease (and quality) of VCRs.

I've loved this song since it came out. I always suspected this song was about their experiences in America, but it wasn't until Wikipedia that I realized just how autobiographical their songs really are.

The 6 track EP that was released along with this album, with B-sides and tracks that didn't make it to the album (I think it was called "Somewhere Else"???), was better than the actual album, IMHO. Wish I hadn't gotten rid of it at some point.
