I find this analysis fascinating, but there's a lot in the movie that is intentionally misleading and ambiguous. The best thing about the ending is it's ambiguousness. Some things just don't have answers, and don't need them.

It seems to me that the lack of clothing change is to help us decipher which characters are which. This is common in films where it is easy to confuse characters, and The Thing needs as much distinction between characters as it can get, since character development is minimal.
