About this user
ABC For Life is a Hout Bay community-based literacy programme, initiated by Lola Kramer and Val Toledo. We teach illiterate children (who have fallen behind in the school system) the basic tools necessary for everyday life: speaking, reading and writing. We are based at Sentinel Intermediate School in Hout Bay, where children often struggle to keep up, due to large classes and lack of qualified teachers. We also target street children, teach them to read and write, and bridge them back into the mainstream education system, whereby they have a better chance at a bright future. Why the ABC for Life program? This was a highly successful program started for adults who were illiterate or semi-literate. It was begun in Apartheid era South Africa for factory and unskilled workers to empower them with literacy. This proved very successful and the program was developed for us with school children. Our vision: As our name suggests the program aims to change illiterate or semi-literate people into those competent in speaking, reading and writing English.
It aims to change frustrated learners into independent life-long learners (ABC for LIFE!) For more information about our project please visit us on: www.houtbayeducationaltrust.co.za
