How precise is the number of results in a site: query?
How reliable is the 'site:domain.com' query in determining the number of pages in the Google index?

Don't know that I believe that - I have 15,000 pages indexed according to Google Webmaster Tools but only 500 according to the site: operator. So I guess I did get 3 significant digits... I just didn't get the 3 MOST significant digits.
