it almost makes me want to laugh when scientists talk about a message traveling at the speed of light needing centuries or even millennia to reach its intended target when we live in a world where it takes light one fourteenth of a second to get to the other side of the planet.

I think this is a misuse of the word "paradox". Space is HUGE, it takes years even centuries and millennia for LIGHT to travel from star to star. Beings advanced enough for such travel would be EXTREMELY rare, though I believe life itself is very common.
