About Me:
When I first met my "wife to be" back in 2005, I'll be honest I knew nothing about a central European country called Slovakia.
I remember well the first thing I said when I was introduced to her... are you Russian!
Oops... that comment broke the ice (possibly not in the best way)!
When she replied "No, I'm from Slovakia"... my eyes glazed over.. Slovakia.. where's Slovakia!
I'll be honest; I knew of a country called Czechoslovakia, but she put me right pretty sharpishly about that one!
To cut a long story short, we hit it off straight away.
A few months later I made my first trip to Slovakia... and fell in love with the country.
Getting of that plane in Bratislava on a very cold and snowy March day will stay with me for ever.
The 3 hour trip from Žilina to Bratislava by road in an old knackered Lada with no heating and two heavy smokers in the front (with the windows fully wound up) will also stay with my forever ;)
With the only Slovak words I knew being "Dobrý den" (and said very badly) communicating; was to say difficult at first.
After spending 9 days in Slovakia it was time to go home and I felt very sad as I'd had such a fantastic time.
But I took away with me some very special memories and the ability to Snowboard :)
I couldn't wait to spend more time in Slovakia, so over the next few years made very regular visits to the city of Žilina (my wife's hometown) in Slovakia.
Again cutting a long story short again, we married in Žilina in 2008 and now have two lovely children.
Both of our children hold dual nationalities and were christened in Žilina.
With the help of books, audio CD's and lots of help (and patience) from my wife, I can now speak enough Slovak to be understood!
Over the years I have explored most of Slovakia, absorbing the culture, life style and most of all making many good friends along the way.
Thank you Slovakia :)
P.S. The correct pronunciation of Žilina: The "Ž" letter is spoken like the "s" in the word "vision" and the "ilina" part is pronounced as "ill-eena", now put both parts together and voila!
