Fang Zhang, a storage analyst at research firm iSuppli Corp. in Santa Clara, Calif., estimated the drop in worldwide hard drive production will be 30 percent for this year's fourth quarter. "Definitely, you have a shortage,'' she said. "You're going to pay a lot higher than a traditional drive should cost.''


The prices of external hard drives sold at retail electronics stores have already doubled or tripled, analysts said. There have yet to be comparable price hikes for personal computers largely because retailers are selling machines built before the drive shortages. An iSuppli report predicts that by early next year, inventories will thin out, and soaring prices will lead to a big decrease in PC sales.
