I also agree that the Theory of the Big Bang is a good reason as to why the universe is expanding, but with the (fairly) recent discovery of the universe's rate of expansion accelerating, and the introduction of "Dark Energy", couldn't it also be a possibility that the universe was created in a "motionless" state, and then this dark energy proceeded to expand the universe in the way it does now (assuming that dark energy did and does contribute to the acceleration of objects in the universe, as we still don't know much about dark energy)?
