It takes a lot of courage to cover a song that was done by Ray Price and by George Jones. It takes a better singer too. Same goes for Merle Haggard.

When I was a kid I saw Shorty Long on Broadway in Frank Loesser's "The Most Happy Fellow", a great musical that had the misfortune of opening at the same time as "My Fair Lady" and got swamped, as did every other new show at the time.
