I an a 77 year old Jazz Drummer. My first paid gigs were with Bob Barclay's Yorkshire Jazz Band. in 1950. In the band at that time was Diz Disley (guitar/banjo) Dick Hawdon (Tpt) Alan Cooper (Clarinet) all of these became famous.I played during my national Service in the Royal Artillery for the Garrison Dance Band in Larkhill and returned to Leeds/Bradford to rejoin Th Yorkshire Jazz Band. We played regularly all over the country and in 1960/61 often at the Cavern in Liverpool with the Beatles as support Band.
I changed musical direction after hearing the Count Basie Band play it's very first Concert in the Uk at St Georges Hall Bradford. I played in Mainstream bands and then with the Joe Markey Seven a west coast influenced band that had a long residency at a large hotel in Bradford. It was here that I got to play with major British jazz stars that included Harold McNair. Working all the time in Jazz outfits and in Caberet plus Dance Funtions I played many different styles.
in the 70's and 80's I worked with Joe Newman, Danny Moss, George Chisolm, Kenny Baker, Don Weller, and often with Joe Harriiot . Later in the 90's I ran my own jazz club with a resident trio plus guests. This still exists today and I have worked regularly with Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams, Jimmy Skidmore , Allan Skidmore, Don Weller, Mark Nightingale, Jim Mullen, Guy Barker, John and Jeanne Pisano and american guitarist Royce Campbell. The late Danny Moss played every year for me when he visited England from Australia and we became good friends. He rang me regularly from Australia during the last 5 years of his life . I worked with Rande Sanke , Ken Peplowski, John Bunch and Jay Leanhardt at the Blackpool Swinging Jazz Party. Bobby Worth sat in on my kit and wanted to buy my Istanbul K Zyldian. Then Jake Hannah asked me if I would sell it. Jake Hanna said I was swinging like a demon and bought me a drink or two. That sent me home happy .
I'm back playing dixieland again and mostly with the Peter Frank Dixieland All Stars, but some with an all star band of my own leaning towards mainstream. Looks like I've come full circle. I occasionally play Big band but Sextets are my favourite size of band and I am not a great reader.
I love photography and I have a large camper van and like to get away in it when I can. Last year I spent three months touring France and took a break from the music apart from sitting in with a band in Benidorm and with a rock band in France. I'm 78 in two months and wonder just how long it will all last. I think I'll keep going a few years more and celebrate my Eightieth Birthday with a big Jazz Party
