Sometimes people don't realise anime is different from other forms of cartooning; the animations themselves are so unique and original, and anyone who watches anime will know the experience is like viewing a million different pieces of artwork strung together in a single episode/film. Not to mention that the storylines themselves can be exaggerated to the weirdest sense, and still give you a lesson about life. Anime opens the heart to new moral perspectives- a thing that other cartoons fail to do.
I love to watch anime because it helps me to escape the real world. When I get home, stressed from friendship complications or the general school atmosphere, I like nothing more than to sit on my own with an episode of anime playing (Especially a slice-of-life) which makes me feel good.
I also have an interest for the Japanese culture, where it seems people actually have respect for each other. I think everything is also drawn in a lighter sense, if that makes any sense. And the best thing is, you don't have to watch it at a certain impossible time like a TV show. I can just google a site such as tailedfox.com or planetbleach.com, and fit in episodes around my schedule and personal life.
I can relate to the characters. For the simple fact they are teenagers, and so am I. No one can reject you, in an anime, but you're still surrounded by characters you can choose to love or hate without much consequence. I've come to terms with the fact I just don't fit in with the real world very well...I guess I belong in an anime.
