About Me:

I love people who speak rarely, and hesitantly, yet when they do speak always manage to say something profound, like a flash of lightning in the dead of night. I love the eclectic, dark, passionate, and artistic types who pour their lifeblood into macabre, beautiful things. I love introverted people who are cynical, with sharp sarcasm and and wit to ease the bitterness of the world. I loathe people who tell me they would only love me if I were something other than who I am, whether they are well-meaning girls wanting to give me a makeover, evangelical christians, needy men who want me to coddle them, or finger-wagging judgmental types (whether redneck bible thumpers or militant environmentalists).

stossel delivers a few good points, but he is still missing a big part of the picture, which is habitat destruction. if habitat protection isnt working well, we need more protection and less human population. you cant totally oppose market forces, because that will be a losing battle. but letting the market run its course unregulated will reinforce human's most ignorant, self destructive impulses. there has to be a balance between free market and enforced government regulation. the first time i ever heard of stossel in the 80's, he was coming on the scene with a big segment entitled "greed is good". no suprise his new job is on the FOX business channel.

i am not a peta person. many animal rights activists are ignorant and would cause an ecosystem to die so they can try to save every single "bambi". i grew up aroung subsitence farmers, free range pioneer style. my first job during highschool was on a free range beef farm. my parents still allow hunters into their woods to kill and take deer. if you want to see why i wont eat factory farm beef, watch the last 20 minutes of "fast food nation". i wont eat anything that i would not be able to look at and kill myself, so i dont eat beef or pork at all. it is certainly possible to kill an animal and still show reverence for it and its species.

thanks for the vid. actually aligator farms in southern united states saved aligators from the brink of dissaepearing. i would support these farms, but only as part of the solution. habitat is also an issue that would need to be resolved, because habitats support millions of species, and a factory farm does not, so then we are left with the issue of factory farming. the animals that we would save would only be the top-of the food chain largest animals, while replacing the functions of their habitat with factory farmed food. millions of smaller, "less valuable" animals would still go extinct. while stossel says the words, "the mink get to live", it showed a mink in a tiny cage, frantically darting back and forth in the insanity-inducing confinement that tears the soul out of animals in factory farms.

i didnt say that your view ("there's nothing to be 'taken care of'") is the same as the fudamentalist view "let god take care of it", i said it has the same RESULT. although the other thing that fundamentalists say is "everthing is perfectly as god wants it to be, and we leave it up to him", is nearly identical to what you are saying, minus the god part. and it has the same RESULT.

"all that we need for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing"

people who want to save the environment generally dont want to "have dominion over it", they want to live in harmony with it.

i am not trying to preach religion or convert anyone, but as i see it, the basic teachings of christ were as follows:

resist pride, resist anger, resist hatred, resist greed, resist materialism, be charitable, be humble, forgive everyone, love everyone, love your enemies.....and follow these rules in an extremely devoted, self sacrificing way, not just half-assed.

the "christian" right wing doesnt just ignore these values, they REVERSE THEM into "be proud", "be greedy", "hate your enemies", "dont forgive anyone"...

there are groups of scientists and researchers who update the lists of endangered species. here in america, when a species reaches the status of most extremely edangered, we put them on a protected list and try to take measures to protect that species. that helps, as a micromanaging approach. but worldwide, other countries do not focus this way, especially in places like rwanda, which is so frequently in a state of civil war. human overpopulation and our over-indulgence in resource consumption are the more general causes. the list of crisis in the environment is very long and tangled, including the coral reefs dying and the decimating overfishing of the oceans.

these are ENDANGERED species, not a no-cure foregone conclusion, but very seriously endangered.

1) You keep treating the problem of extinction as a foregone conclusion even though I disagree with you. You must establish that there is a problem before you can ask me to help solve the problem. You're putting the cart before the horse.
2) When I spoke of "harnessing evil", I was speaking of "evil" is other people's eyes. I don't believe in "evil". Evil is deliberately doing the wrong thing. No one does that. Everyone thinks they're doing the right thing. There is no "evil" but ignorance.
3) I'm not saying "let god take care of it," I'm saying "there's nothing to be 'taken care of' in the first place."
4) I will gladly exchange something of lesser value for something of greater value, but apparently we have different values.
5) I agree that Christians misinterpret Christ's original teachings. I disagree that Christ's original teachings were good.
