Worst to First wants to focus our collective efforts on 3 very focused directives. We see these directives as B&W, you are either with usor you are against us. These 3 areas of focus are:

PROVIDING OUR CHILDREN WITH AN EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE, PROTECTING THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF OUR CHILDREN, AND INVESTING IN SUCCESS, INSTEAD OF PAYING FOR FAILURE.

We put particular emphasis on the word investing. When we invest in children, we invest in our collective future. For far too long, our state has underfunded programs for Floridas kids. We are collectively paying the price for having the wrong priorities. There is a very simple question to ask yourself.

Would you rather pay to put a kid in prison or in college?

The answer seems self-evidentyet why do we continue to spend more per prisoner, then per student. Supporting kids with words is easy. Supporting them with deeds takes leadership. Join us in changing the way Florida care for its kids.

PROTECTING THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF OUR CHILDREN
Few things in life are more painful than looking into the eyes of a sick child. One of the only things worse is knowing that that child cant afford to see a doctor.

When Lawton Chiles was governor, people who worked for a living knew their children could get health care, because if their employer didnt provide health insurance, they were eligible for insurance through a childrens health program. Today, Florida is among the worst three states in the country to be a child and to be sick, with nearly 20% of our children lacking health insurance, and more losing it every day as their hard-working get laid off through no fault of their own and lose their health insurance along with their jobs.

We are spending plenty of taxpayer money on health, but we arent spending it wisely. We spend over $150,000 per infant trying to save babies born far too soon or too ill to make it on their own when they could have had healthy births if we had invested a fraction of the money instead making sure their mothers had access to health care during pregnancy. Our grandmothers all taught us that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. They were right. And we spend billions every year on all of the social problems that come along with teen pregnancy in both rural Florida and our big cities—drugs, alcohol, child abuse, neglect, welfare, and wasted productivity—because instead of giving our kids both the values and the knowledge to make good decisions, we are failing to teach them the basics of birth control and instead teaching them only about abstinence. Its important to teach our children about abstinence—none of us wants our children to become sexually active before they are emotionally ready—but it is foolish to refuse to teach them about birth control when we know that most of them will have sex before marriage, just as most of us did.

When Lawton Chiles was governor, we created an anti-smoking campaign that became a model for states around the country, and the rates of teen smoking dropped dramatically. Today, that program is in disarray, and teenage smoking is on the rise. Its time for Florida to lead again.
