A PAUL WILLIAMS TRIBUTE

~~~~~~~~~ PAUL WILLIAMS ~~~~~~~~~
***~Singer/Songwriter/Choreographer~***
********ULTIMATE TEMPTATION******** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Paul Williams was best known for being the heart and soul of the group "The Temptations". He was the original Lead Singer, Choreographer & Visionary for the group. In the beginning Paul was the one that gave them their originality, he designed their shows, developed their style & sealed their deal with Motown. Paul's lead vocals & showmanship were main deciding factors for Gordy... The Temptations would change, but Paul was the irreplaceable heart & soul of the group, just his vocals let alone his showstopping performances were next to none. With that emotionally charged heart stopping baritone, his heart-wrenching version of "For Once In My Life", could hold an audience spellbound and in the palm of his hand. Though absent from our presence he still captivates us even now...
:::Early Days:::
Paul was born July 2, 1939 in Birmingham, Alabama. He sang in the church choir, where he met and befriended Eddie Kendrick. The two, along with Kell Osborne would eventually make their way to Detroit but even as smooth and polished as they were, "The Primes", would only become one of many unknown groups around the city. Tired of small time gigs, the group split up. Another group who had seen The Primes rehearse, just happened to have two spots to fill in their group, "The Distants". They would be more than happy to have the two groups merge. The merging of the two groups would birth "The Elgins"...
:::Introducing "The Temptations":::
Paul was named lead singer for the group, and upon request they changed their name to "The Temptations" as they auditioned for Motown's founder, Berry Gordy. Paul led the Temps on "Oh Mother of Mine", leaving Gordy impressed by his rich, earthy baritone. Paul was sure to have given this performance his all, the group was offered a contract on the spot. Indeed, without Paul Williams we may not have ever known The Temptations.
:::Paul takes the Lead:::
Paul was a fabulous dancer, and elements of his style would later be evident in all The Temptations' great moves. The steps and hand gestures he created were clever, classy, sexy, and unique. The group would spend hours practicing their moves and their singing. In the group's early years, most of their material was written by Smokey Robinson with the leads going to Paul or Eddie. Paul fronted the group on a series of early records between 1961 and 1963 including "Oh Mother Of Mine", "Romance Without Finance", "Check Yourself", "The Further You Look, The Less You See", and "I Want I Love I Can See". Things would change when David joined the group in 1964, despite the fact that Paul was always a star, and his showstopping numbers were equal to none.
:::The Everchanging Temptations:::
Paul endured the constant bandmate interchanges and replacements and continued to perform for several years... By the Spring of 1969, it is believed that financial, emotional pressures and other unfortunate circumstances along with the disease Sickle Cell Anemia were bearing down on Paul. Onstage, he would reach a point where he was gasping for breath, and eventually the group would travel with an oxygen tank for Paul. However Paul continued to sing with The Temptations through various hits including "I Wish It Would Rain", "Cloud 9", and "Just My Imagination" ft. himself and Eddie Kendricks... As he got sicker, he had no choice but to come off the road, and in 1971, Paul had been made to step down... Paul Williams would have no choice but to leave the group.
:::Exit Paul Williams & Eddie Kendrick(s):::
Even though Paul was no longer in the group, the guys saw each other regularly and in 1973, Eddie reached out to Paul, producing and co-writing a solo song for him titled "Feel Like Givin' Up". Any consideration of releasing that song, with it's lyrics that were too literal to bear, came to a halt with the tragic death of Paul Williams on August 17, of 1973, of which the cause of is still disputed til' this day. The song would eventually be released in 1995 as part of a Temptations' compilation.
:::Ultimate Temptation:::
Paul Williams made an outstanding contribution to Music, Motown, the fans & The Temptations as the Heart & Soul of the group, He was the backbone of the group for many years... Until his death, he gave us his all. Though sometimes underrated, and underappreciated, he is simply amazing, blessed are the fans & were The Temptations... With a tremendous amount of work selflessly done, each and every bit of it with heart & soul, perhaps even without ever knowing it, Paul Williams, the Ultimate Temptation, will never leave us...
Paul was not only a group's leader, but a solo artist who didn't mind sharing the spotlight, a true singer in any setting... He was born to sing. We can only hope that he had always known and always kept an understanding of his gifting's significance with him, because we always will... -WLFP
I remember seeing the Temptations at the Apollo in Harlem. great performance though limited choreography because of the, newly added, octopus microphone. My cousin, the late record producer and record store owner, Bobby Robinson trated my younger siblings, sister Valerie and (late) brother Billy to the show. he had promised to get us backstage but was unable to do so. Still a memory, i'll never forget. the Great Paul Williams served as spokesman for the group. i must ask; Were you related?
Thank you so much for posting and for doing a wonderful job with your page dedicated to an outstanding singer like Paul Williams. As a lover of music and singer i can say from my heart i enjoy the music as performed by Paul. You may be able to learn from a teacher of music how to sing but, as a singer you have to have that special ability to interpret music in order to reach out and touch those that you are singing to. Paul did this like only a chosen few can and many times better than most. He had it all. Voice, emotion, presense and ability to perform and captivate an audience. No one can teach you to sing with all those qualities Paul exhibited every time he sang. He had a gift that only he knew the source of its beginning.
