As most of you know Google/YouTube (YT) has recently ended their partnership and licensing agreement with Warner Music Group (WMG). WMG was demanding more royalty money from YouTube to have music and music videos on their site. This would have been more advertising revenue per play from the music videos. Also, WMG (allegedly) was also demanding that You Tube charge users an upload fee for each video that has WMGs music in them.
As a result of this action by Google/YouTube WMG has ordered YouTube to remove ALL their official music videos and ALL videos using their music.
YouTube is also in the process of negotiating licensing deals with Universal Music Group, Sony/BMG and EMI. It is expected those deals may fail if those companies make demands similar to WMG.
It is a well known fact that the big recording conglomerates hate the internet. The music industry is stuck in the dark ages when people had to buy a physical copy (CD, record, cassette tape) of whatever music they wanted. They are against the free flow of information that is the internet as we know it. They don't like the idea that someone could get their favorite music for free off the internet. So they consider uploading videos that have music on them to be copyright infringement or piracy.
What these companies don't understand is that sites such as YouTube help promote their music. A lot of people discover new music on YouTube and actually go and buy it. They just don't get it. And they were making money from the advertising so what are they complaining about. Now they will have no promotion and make no money.
Warner Music Group has also caused problems with other websites as well and also with i-tunes. WMG CEO Edgar Bronfman is also the same person who organized the music industry to sue Napster a few years back. Napster was a music file sharing site at the time. Edgar Bronfman was head of Universal Music Group at the time.
People need to be aware that individual users could be sued by record companies for uploading copyrighted music on the internet. One of the purposes of YouTube's licensing agreements was to protect users from just that. That protection has now been lost since WMG's music is no longer licensed to YouTube. Since it was Google/YouTube that broke up the licensing agreement and partnership any fair use claims from users will probally get ignored or result in suspension of their channels.
