We didn't fail miserably. The US retracted itself because of those shit hippies and the political tension they were creating.
If we put all that political shit aside, the US won nearly every battle over time and we definately could have won this conflict. We suffered losses, sure, but significantly less than the enemy we were fighting against.
Nobody ''really'' won this war, in other words - Vietnam won the political war, and the US won the actual war.
