RACE DOES MATTER
It would be nice if it didn't, but it does. The question is "why?"
The easy answer is history. Our society is built on what came before, the ideas and traditions of our ancestors. This is simply how societies advance themselves.
Unfortunately, along with the good, there is always some bad. There are aspects of American culture that remain from its early history, including a caste system based on ethnicity and modern ideas of "race". The American ideal that "All men are created equal" used to be the most hypocritical aspect of our Constitution. It is only with the abolition of slavery in 1865, Women's Sufferage in 1920, and the Civil Rights legislation of 1964 that this country truly began to live up to its lofty claims of equality.
But there is still work to do in this regard, and there are a multitude of examples as to why this is still true. As long as liberty, justice and equality matter, these unresolved issues related to race will matter.
