One of my fave Nationals, partly because my annual fave Spanish Steps finished in the top 4, but then I was only 6 at the time...

I always backed Spanish Steps in the 70's Nationals. me Mam always backed Rummy. I think she won that argument :) So sad that Crisp got clipped right in the last furlong though.

My fave national has always been the Lucius National of 1978 because it was so close, any of about 8 could have won it ...

Curious how this game differs from Quinteros' game against Keene, where it was all positional, this was all tactics. Both cracking good games!

What about 42... Nb6 instead of Nf6?

Puts pressure on a4 & c4, allows the bad bishop on e8 to exchange & try to untangle somewhat. It can't be worse than what entailed...
