@crostil Now you really are clutching at straws. You don't know much about disabled people, do you. And even less about wheelchairs! So much for your waffling about the DDA. You claim to represent "several disabled people in the town" (do they know that?) but by no means "all". Do you now accept ...

@crostil I'm sorry that you cannot accept that a wheelchair user does not find "unjustifiably disadvantage" progress at the crossing. It must be particularly annoying for you to have someone challenge you. Too bad. I remain strongly supportive of the installation of gates on the basis of safet...

@crostil You wrote "I am campaigning form change that is obvious." What is not obvious is why you are campaigning and who you represent. Also, you duck the question about whether you are a wheelchair/scooter user, so perhaps you are hiding behind disabled people to hide your own agenda? As for "...

@crostil Re your last point - because I believe the gates are necessary; and that the gates are no real obstacle to the majority. You are welcome to your views. @AC A closer look at Wareham reveals the DCC lease the crossing until 2013 only. By then I think the plan is to build a (foot)bridge and close the crossing. The circumstances are different at Govier's Lane. Interesting story to follow though!

Interesting developments at Wareham. The ungated crossing, fitted with red/green warning lights, has proved so dangerous, with people crossing against the red light and in front of moving trains, now has gates fitted. When a train is due, the gates are closed by an attendant housed in a nearby an...

@AS We'll be setting off for a wander soon. We will encounter two gated footpath crossings and cross safely. It is usual to find other wheelchair and scooter users (and people with pushchairs and bikes) making the same crossings, again without fuss or danger. It's all about technique. And it's al...

@ADMIRALSCORNER And that's precisely why the WSR uses fully competent drivers, each of which is fully aware of the weight of their train, of the "road" ahead, of sighting issues, of the condition of the rails, and the braking system on the train. WSR DISCUSSION ABOUT WATCHET CROSSING Part 4
The discusions continue trying to find a practical and legal way forward to bring improvements at the crossing into action now.
@ADMIRALSCORNER The recent Law Commission report states on Network Rail, there are nearly 4000 public crossings of which more than 2000 are public footpath crossings. There are a further 2600 private crossings of various types.

@AS Just a thought - if local people think the national regulations are not helping the situation, then it may need a political intervention, and I wonder if anyone here can advise what the local MP has to say on the subject? I'm sure he'd welcome a change in the regs that could mean up to 7000 c...

WSR DISCUSSION ABOUT WATCHET CROSSING Part 3
We hear what the railway has in mind "long term"
@AS Indeed. The platform and crossing have nothing in common here. The platform is clearly private property, for the use of people using the railway. Whereas the crossing, whilst also private property, is "permissive" and as such is subject to regulations.

@AS Don't shoot me - but - I think the requirement is to make "reasonable" adjustments. One man's view of "reasonable" may differ from the next man. @AS Yes! That crossing is poor. But then almost all footpath crossings are not suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs or scooters. There must be some good examples of urban footpath crossings in GB that are easy for all to use? I've found one or two and I have asked for more details.

@AS I think the standards are relatively new (when compared with the age of most crossings) so the standards only kick in when there is a change to the crossing. A survey of footpath crossings shows a huge variety of styles and standards, some of the bad/primitive examples make Govier's look like...

@AS Then why have they allowed the crossing at Wareham? Surely a precedent like Wareham is the way out for the RRs here. The Wareham crossing has TWO tracks with line speeds exceeding 60mph. And yet protection for pedestrians is limited to a fence chicane (to stop folks going straight onto the tr...

@AS Please remember the low speed of the train means that it can be brought to a halt before reaching the crossing if there is someone already on the crossing. @AS My son and I have easily traversed that crossing (Alcombe Footpath Crossing on Marsh Common) many times since 1977. We have even managed, safely, to use the gate across the path to the south near Seaward Way. But then we only have a manually pushed wheelchair and not a mobility scooter.
