Mohammed Conteh (aka.Tyson)

Age 20

Stoko Village, Makeni Town, Bomboli District

Unfortunately during the war I lost my brother who was supporting my education, therefore I had to become a drop out from school. I was jobless and responsible for my mother and children of my late brother. Despite these challenges I tried to continue with my music and play/movie writing skills by forming a small drama group which has gradually developed into a movie group.

Self expression is important. The obstacles in this country are the high rate of illiteracy and the fact that poor people do not get the opportunity of expressing themselves in public. The rich people do not want to consider the problems of the poor people.

Due to the fact my country is recently recovering from a war, I have got a lot of stories I want to develop into a movie so that our generation and future generations will watch them and reflect on the causes and dangers of wars.

During this war I was cut and taken to the bush and I was there for 3 months before I could able to escape When I found my family I was told my father was killed and we moved to Guinea to protect our lives. After sometime we heard that the war was over then we come back. I was unable to go to school because of money and sometimes even couldnt eat.

Self-expression is important because you can share ideas from each other in a community.

I want to partake in film/video production because it improved countries like Ghana and Nigeria. I also want Sierra Leone to be among them.

Age 24

Seaside Community, Freetown

My history started when I was born in a slum area called Black Hall Road, Freetown. After many years of school I was unfortunate and couldnt further my education because of financial problem. So I see nothing to do but to link myself to cultural and drama activities. With all my experience I got from these activities I now see my future in it.

I think I would benefit from WeOwnTV programme with the results that people will get to know my talents, my hardworking skills, my good humour and my self expression.

Can Your Film Change the World? pangeaday - 709,272 views - 1 year ago
Here's a big idea: Pangea Day plans to use the power of film to bring the world a little closer together. We're divided by borders, race, religion, conflict... but most of all by misunderstanding and mistrust. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that -- to help people see themselves in others -- through the power of film.

On May 10, 2008 -- Pangea Day -- sites in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked to produce a 4-hour program of powerful films, visionary speakers, and uplifting music. The program will be broadcast live to the world through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.

Your film could be part of it. The online video revolution has helped spawn a new generation of grass-roots film-makers worldwide. Much of the output, of course, is mediocre. But hidden in there are amazing talents capable of using film to astonishing effect... and capable of telling stories that can create powerful bonds between us.

So ask yourself this. If you had the entire world's attention for just a few minutes, what story would you tell? Perhaps you think the world looks at you, your country and your culture... and just doesn't understand. Then do something about it. Make a film and upload it here http://www.youtube.com/group/p angeaday You never know. It could end up bringing millions of people that bit closer together.

Pangea is the name of the original super-continent which contained all the world's land mass before the continents started splitting apart 250 million years ago. We're launching Pangea Day with the vision that the people of the world can begin to overcome their divisions, and that the power of film can help make it possible.

Movies can't change the world. But the people who watch them can.

To register as a film-maker, to get more ideas about film submissions, or to host a screening or learn how you can get involved, please visit our website at http://www.pangeaday.org.

"This revolution will be televised"

'WeOwnTV' translates in Sierra Leonean Krio as 'Our Own TV.'

WeOwnTV is a collaborative media project that promotes self-expression as a way to explore our shared humanity and bridge cultural divides.

Our first program uses community based media workshops to teach filmmaking techniques to a group of Sierra Leonean young adults. WeOwnTV has engaged a wide range of participants from young media professionals and students, to ex-combatant, street kids and child prostitutes. The program involves a community-engaged curriculum in which project participants will collaboratively create and produce their own independent media. WeOwnTV will empower its participants, reawakening their imaginations to the possibility of positive change.

WeOwnTV will provide the technical support, encouragement and training that will allow these young adults to creatively produce their own media and share their experiences and ideas with the world.
