Malalai Joya has been called Afghanistans bravest woman. When the Taliban ruled her country, she braved death, running an underground girls school. When the US military overthrew the Taliban she ran for parliament.
But that doesnt mean shes a supporter of the U.S. military, or President Obamas decision to double the number of American troops in her country.
Unfortunately, President Obamas foreign policy is a lot like [the] criminal Bush, she said in a sit-down in interview during a recent visit to San Francisco. He follows war in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Pakistan.
Joyas opposition to the U.S.-NATO occupation of Afghanistan began shortly after foreign troops arrived in 2001.
Immediately after the 9/11 tragedy, my people thought maybe this time the US government will be helpful for our people, she said. They were hopeful that Taliban domination has been destroyed maybe this time they will give a chance to justice-loving, democrat-minded people of my country. At least to people who dont have bloody hands!
But Joya found that hope dashed quickly as early as December 2003 in the first meeting of Afghanistans newly-elected constitutional assembly. She looked around the room and saw the United States and NATO had invited a whos who of the warlords who had destroyed her country to form a new government.
She was 24. And she couldnt stay silent.
I wish to criticize my compatriots in this room, she said amid boos, catcalls and scattered cheers. Why would you allow criminals to be present at this Loya Jirga, warlords responsible for our countrys situation? Afghanistan is the center for national and international conflicts. They oppress women and have ruined our country. They should be prosecuted. They might be forgiven by the Afghan people, but not by history.
The chairman responded by throwing her out.
The sister has crossed the line of what is considered common courtesy, he said, banging his gavel. She is banished from this assembly and cannot return. Send her out! Guards, throw her out! She doesnt deserve to be here.
But Joya did not give up. She ran for Parliament again in 2005 and was elected a second time.
In 2006, she was physically attacked on the floor of the Parliament.......

L'ex-députée afghane Malalai Joya n'a que 31 ans, mais déjà elle a été menacée de mort à plusieurs reprises. Dans son pays, son franc parler dérange les seigneurs de la guerre et leurs alliés, qui ont tout fait pour lui mettre les bâtons dans les roues. En 2007, ils ont finalement réussi à l'expulser du Parlement.
Malalai Joya était à Montréal pour faire la promotion de son livre A woman among warlords (Une femme au milieu des seigneurs de la guerre) et pour demander au Canada de retirer ses troupes d'Afghanistan.

La plus jeune députée afghane, Malalai Joya, effectue une tournée au Canada pour demander le retrait des troupes canadiennes en Afghanistan. Elle dénonce la corruption du régime en place à Kaboul et la présence des seigneurs de la guerre au sein du gouvernement.
Invitée par la Fédération des femmes du Québec et le collectif Échec à la guerre, elle donnera une conférence mardi soir à l'Université du Québec à Montréal. Elle en profitera pour parler de son livre A Woman Among Warlords dans lequel elle raconte sa vie dans un contexte de guerre. Elle commence ainsi: « Je viens d'un pays de tragédies qui s'appelle l'Afghanistan. »
Celle que l'on surnomme la femme la plus courageuse d'Afghanistan n'a que 31 ans. Elle a été élue députée avec une forte majorité en 2005, puis elle a été bannie du Parlement deux ans plus tard, parce qu'elle dénonçait les seigneurs de la guerre qui occupent des postes élevés au Parlement, malgré leur lourd passé criminel.
Quand elle prenait la parole, les parlementaires fermaient son micro. Elle n'a jamais pu terminer une intervention. Elle a été menacée de viol dans l'enceinte même de la législature.
Le premier ministre du Canada, Stephen Harper, était à Kaboul quand elle a été expulsée du Parlement. « Il n'a pas levé le petit doigt pour défendre ma liberté de parole », affirme Malalai Joya.
Pour le retrait de l'OTAN
Selon Mme Joya, la présence de l'OTAN dans son pays apporte plus de souffrance que de solution au peuple afghan.
« La corruption est partout », dit-elle. Les gens de sa région lui rapportent que quand des voleurs et des tueurs sont arrêtés, il arrive que des équipes de reconstruction provinciale, les troupes de l'OTAN, interviennent pour les faire libérer.
« Les tribunaux sont un repère de fondamentalistes. Des femmes ont été aspergées d'acide à Kandahar. Qu'a fait le gouvernement Karzaï? Il a proposé aux talibans de se joindre à l'administration, déplore-t-elle. Pourquoi le Canada qui a ses troupes sur place n'a-t-il pas protesté? »
La jeune députée s'adresse maintenant aux militaires canadiens et à leur famille. Elle dit reconnaître leur sacrifice, mais estime que les troupes de l'OTAN devraient se retirer dès maintenant. Quand on lui dit que l'Afghanistan risquerait alors de basculer dans la guerre civile, elle répond: « Nous sommes déjà en guerre civile. »
Malalai Joya, qui vit à Kaboul, a été victime de plusieurs tentatives d'assassinat. Elle refuse l'exil afin de continuer son travail sur le terrain, même si elle doit déménager presque tous les jours et qu'elle voit très peu son mari. « La vie dune femme [en Afghanistan] ne pèse pas plus lourd que la vie d'un oiseau », dit-elle.

WINNIPEG, Nov. 16, 2009: Malalai Joya visited Winnipeg as part of her 2009 cross-country tour to convince Canadians to press for the withdrawal of their troops from Afghanistan. She packed the house and spoke with passion about the oppression of her people under the combined weight of the Taliban, Hamid Karzai's warlord drugocracy, and the NATO occupation. Her message was one not heard in this country (loosely paraphrased): Go home! You are making our lives harder! It is a lesson we must all take to heart.
