Hidden and scattered among the birthplace of Microsoft are several forgotten sanctuaries where a variety of ecosystems thrive. You don't have to travel far to find a Wetland, Watershed or Storm Water Retention Pond - better said, you don't have to travel far to find yourself neck deep in adventure and discovery. I have spent my entire life in the Northwest - I want to share with you the joys and splendor of finding these hidden treasures. In 1996, my brother and I would spend hours finding places to play Pokemon Red and Blue on our Game Boy Colors. For years, we tried to emulate the experience of adventuring around an unknown land, meeting strange creatures and forging unusual friendships by searching for places that made us feel like we were in a foreign land. The intense desire for exploration and discovery is something that, to this day, has led me to lift every log, examine every plant and admire every insect during my travels. Some of my fondest memories involve my escapades through the Northern Cascades and the Olympic Peninsula, where my dad had on many occasions told me "I could out-walk the entire family, and I likely spend more time underwater than above it."

The west coast has a rich native heritage, though one has to struggle to find it. Much of it has been developed (Redmond is no exception!), with forests being torn apart to make way for apartments and business plazas. Don't be fooled, though! You can find evidence of Washington's flourishing ecosystems in even the smallest places. Every creek, every river, every swamp and pond, every wetland and every preserve offers a small glimpse into the past - every area changes drastically with the seasons, offering something new and interesting to be investigated.

Despite our small state, the differences between Eastern and Western Washington are many. Here near the coast, you will encounter rich rain forests and verdant wetlands. The northeast offers contrast with it's dry deserts and wind-battered plains. Although we are home to many local ecosystems, we are also home to many, many invasive ones.

Washington is constantly changing and the fight between native and invasive species and ecosystems is ongoing.

Walking is one of the simplest things we can do. Walking isn't about getting from one place to the other, it's about seeing what's on the way.

If there's one thing I wish to accomplish, it's assuring you that there is something to be discovered in every corner of the earth, no matter how small. And all it takes is a little bit of Walking.

That's the philosophy I have here, and I hope you all enjoy my adventures through the lush backdrop of Washington : )
