The "Historical Field Forge" of the Thirty Years' War from Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
We are a group of the Historical Festival Play "The Master Draught".
With a 15-member team and two historically accurate replicas of field forges from the time of the Thirty Years' War we bring the old blacksmithing back to life.
According to the legend of the "Master Draught" General Count Johann Tserclaes Tilly conquered the protestant imperial city of Rothenburg in 1631 with his catholic army of 60,000 men.
An army of this size naturally required a special degree of military logistics. To keep this army functional and viable, a large number of craftsmen such as carpenters, shoemakers, masons, bridge builders and gunsmiths, were necessary.
As the blacksmiths were important for the conduct of war, they brought all their tools in the form of portable forges into the field.
The blacksmiths worked for the war (weapons: spears, halberds, swords, armor ...) and also for peace (plowshares, chisels, scissors, nails, horseshoes, door handles, door locks, jewelry, ...).

Historical Festival Play "The Master Draught"
Everyone, young and old, is familiar with the story of brave Mayor Nusch, who, with his legendary "Master Draught" saved the town from destruction and the councillors from the death sentence.
In 1631 during the Thirty Years War, Rothenburg was taken by imperial troops under Count Tilly after bitter fighting. Somewhat amused after being handed the welcome drink - a tankard holding over 3 litres of wine - the Count promised leniency if one of the town citizens could drink the whole tankard in one draught. Nusch took up the challenge and thereby saved his town.
This episode was first performed as a festival play in 1881. Every Whitsun this event is recreated when hundreds of citizens dress up in period costume and take part in the "Master Draught", as well as a historical procession and a variety of military camps.

Imperial City Festival
The Imperial City Festival represents a highlight of the annual calendar of events. The entire history of the town is brought alive by around a thousand participants. Visitors encounter groups of knights, the Royal Riflemen or a hoard of peasants. They may find themselves witnesses to a medieval trial or suddenly in the midst of an ancient cattle market - the illusion seems perfect.
The torchlight procession of all participants and the fireworks with music along the facade of the impressive town hall mark the beginning of this important event on Friday.
On Saturday, no one will want to miss the great fireworks in the Tauber Valley. Against the thunder of cannons and the glow of innumerable fireworks, the town sinks into the night before waking the next day to continue the merry celebrations.
