Yeah, I know the video intro is a little weird... but, as usual, I'm trying something new. I'm doing a bit of a parody of the webshow Red Vs. Blue. It's done by Rooster Teeth, so if you weren't already familiar, I'd recommend googling it to check it out (or follow this link: http://roosterteeth.com/archive/?sid=... ). I get a kick out of it. I watched some of their web shows and then composed music that would be similar, just for kicks and giggles.
My goofy/funny/creative/whatever bit aside, the content for this video is a range review comparing the Kahr CM9 against the Beretta Nano.
The Kahr's rather narrow with a grip of just under an inch wide (.90"). It has some aggressive checkering on the front and back straps and is a two finger grip. So, your pinky either hangs off or tucks underneath. The Beretta's grip is similar, also .90 inches wide. However, the checkering on the front and back straps has a little less bite, and it's longer from front to back, so it fits the hand just a little differently. It has the same two finger issue the Kahr has (where to put that pinky?). That might be an issue for bigger hands, but for me it works fine.
The CM9 only weighs 14oz, so it's light, and I think that helps make it conceal carry more comfortably. The Nano is about 3.5oz heavier, and you might notice that extra weight conceal carrying; however, at the range, it makes it distribute the recoil a little better. So, you notice muzzle flip and recoil a little less than with the Kahr.
I don't expect the Kahr to not have any snap or recoil, especially considering that it has such a short barrel. But, I was surprised at just the degree of how much muzzle flip and recoil I noticed. As I mentioned before, the slightly heavier Nano is a bit less snappy.
The trigger on the CM9 is DAO (double action only) style, but it's smooth and breaks closer to the front of the trigger guard. The Nano also has a DAO style trigger, but it breaks further back in comparison to the Kahr. It's also heavier, and I found it to be a little less smooth.
The sights on the CM9 are a dot and post configuration. For me, that helps me to quickly re-acquire my targets. The Beretta's sights are interchangeable 3 dot sights. And while that does give me the option to put on night sights myself, I don't find my targets as quickly as with the Kahr CM9's dot and post.
The backstrap and frontstrap checkering are really aggressive on the Kahr. So, when I take it to the range with more than 50 or 75 rounds, my hand starts to hurt. As far as how it shoots, though, I don't have a problem controlling it, as long as I make sure to have a really firm grip to kind of compensate for not having something on which to rest my pinky. Overall, I feel that it would make a great CCW gun because it has that nice balance between being light weight and still being accurate and easy to conceal.
With the Beretta, it is a little snappy just by dint of having such a short barrel, but so long as I maintain a firm grip, like with the Kahr, and I could put my groupings where I needed to. I find them very comparable. They are similar in size and have similar shooting experiences. Although, the Beretta's is more enjoyable being that it has less pronounced recoil/muzzle flip, and the checkering isn't as uncomfortable. It is also heavier (which plays into the recoil), which may affect your consideration for CCW. Otherwise, I find them comparable for the single stack, slender, sub compact conceal carry pistol option.
Some final thoughts on the CM9... The magazine doesn't seat exactly flush with the base of the grip. At one point at the range, I tried to seat the mag a little more aggressively to make it flush, and everything fell out. The magazine components and the rounds inside spilled to the floor. While that only happened once in some 500 rounds, I still found that disconcerting.
Recently, I picked up the Hero 2 GoPro camera, and I wanted to try some footage with the slow-mo filming option featuring the CM9 and the Nano. In keeping with my Red vs. Blue theme let me know what you think. Who wins: Red or Blue?
