Congressman Adam Smith is a lifelong resident of Washington State's 9th Congressional District, which encompasses parts of King, Pierce and Thurston counties. In 1990 he ran for the State Senate in Washington, and at just 25 years of age became the youngest serving state senator in the country when he took office in 1991.

In 1996, Adam decided to run for Washington State's Ninth Congressional District. His bid was against incumbent Randy Tate and in one of the most closely watched races in the country, defeated him 50%-47%.

As a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, and the Chairman of Air and Land Forces subcommittee, Adam has worked to provide our military with the personnel, equipment, and capabilities necessary to meet the security threats we face today, as well as those in the future. Adam also serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, where he works to provide our intelligence community with the authority and resources necessary to perform their vital mission.

In 1993, Adam married Spokane native, Sara Bickle-Eldridge, a graduate of the University of Washington and Seattle University School of Law. Their daughter, Kendall Charlotte, was born in July 2000, followed by their son, Jack Evers, in June 2003. The Smiths live in Northeast Tacoma, where their children attend Northeast Tacoma Elementary school and participate in the local sports leagues, and they attend church at St. Matthew's in Browns Point. Both Adam and Sara are involved in various community organizations and Sara recently served two terms as PTA President at their children's school.
