About this user
Ten men drink beer & the bill is $100, if they paid as we pay taxes, it would go like this:
The first 4 men (poorest) pay $0
5th pays $1
6th pays $3
7th pays $7
8th pays $12
9th pays $18
10th man (richest) pays $59
All men drank & were happy until 1 day, the bar owner says, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your bill by $20; the bill is now $80.
The group still wanted to pay as we pay taxes, so the first 4 men were unaffected & drink for free.
But how do the other 6 divide the $20 fairly?' The bar owner suggested to reduce each man's bill by about the same amount.
So, The 5th man, like the first 4, now paid nothing or 100% saved
6th paid $2 not $3 or 33% saved
7th paid $5 not $7 or 28% saved
8th paid $9 not $12 or 25% saved
9th paid $14 not $18 or 22% saved
10th paid $49 not $59 or 16% saved.
The first 6 were better off than before & the first 4 still drank for free. But once outside the bar, the men compared their savings.
"I only got $1 out of the $20," said the 6th man. He pointed to the 10th man, "but he got $10!"
The 5th man said, "I only saved $1, he got 10 times more than I!"
The 7th man said, "Why does he get $10 & I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
The first 4 men yelled, "We didn't get anything, the system exploits the poor!" The 9 men beat up the 10th & the next night the 10th man didn't show, so the 9 had beers without him. When the bill came, they found they didn't have enough money for even half of the bill
