Ever wondered how you can complete the Ragtimer sidequest quickly? Wonder no more! In fact, you can complete this sidequest immediately from loading a saved game. The secret lies in how you move Zidane while in a forest on the world map.
When on the world map, the next encounter is set at a random value from 0 to 255. As you move, the encounter value starts from 0 and increases until the target number is reached, triggering the next encounter. However, if you use the D-pad to barely move Zidane in the fashion shown in the video, you can get Ragtimer to appear at will. The only conclusion that I can come to from experimenting is that everytime you tap (NOT HOLD) the D-pad, the current encounter value increases by 1. Whenever the target encounter value is reached, if the previous value was 1 less than the target, then Ragtimer will appear instead of a normal battle. Sometimes the next encounter comes quickly, sometimes it takes forever!
I hold my controller sideways so that my left thumb presses UP and my right thumb presses DOWN on the D-pad, keeping Zidane 'tip-toeing' in a straight line.
This method of getting Ragtimer to show up is a tedious one, but if you are wanting to complete this sidequest in one go, then this is how I would go about it. Keep in mind this method is not fool-proof (I got at most 14 before my streak ended), but I think it is possible to get all 17 encounters without a random battle or saving.
