Thomas Wolfe wrote you can't go home again. So true (sighs)... My first home was Grant Heights Dependent Housing Area in Nerima in Saitama-ken, a northwestern suburb of Tokyo. During World War II, it had been a kamikaze training base. In 1973, the U.S. Air Force returned the base to Japan and it was redeveloped into New Town and Hikarigaoka-koen, one of the largest municipal parks in the region. Everything I remember was razed in Japan's eagerness to rid any vestiges of World War II, post-war American Occupation and U.S. influence. Can you blame them?
