Ah, it's that lovely woman again. I came back to the Carpenters about 18 months ago and just can't shake the habit of listening to their songs. If only Karen was still around to join Richard for a Christmas special this year.

Much as I like George Harrison, this song doesn't quite have the right qualities for a Bond film. How about trying I Believe You (1978) by the Carpenters, which would work much like Nobody Does It Better does for The Spy Who Loved Me ?

@Vericacious If you can supply the required quality and complexity, then good for you. I don't think a comparison of fingers with limbs is useful, though- finger usage becomes largely second nature with mastery of an instrument. The important element is the physical effort required to play the dr...

@bertiedump Yes, some were worse, but many were a lot better. Leaving aside personal preferences, technological changes and the difficulty of contextualisation, there was a much broader range of programmes, pitched at various levels, in the various programme genres, then, and a far greater willin...

Graeme Souness on his time as Liverpool manager

Graeme Souness was a great central midfield player. He's never paid enough attention to detail, though. The way he talks you'd think Liverpool were a spent force when he took over just before the end of the 1990-91 season. They had won the title in 1990 and had just faltered from top to 2nd, due ...

@ManfredDeJesus You're mixing up some issues here. First, my point is that the demolition was the watershed moment for disco; the beginning of the end, not the end itself. Second, it certainly did hurt Chic- very badly- while Olivia Newton-John is an exceptional case; she was one of the world's s...

@vmuto1 I've just looked it up and the official videos were last dealt with in 1985. Techniques, and expectations, have come a very long way since then. I'd think it disgraceful if a classic film was put out now with the problems that are evident in these videos. Take a look at the Rainy Days and...

@gladieola . What people either don't know or seem to have forgotten is that while this would have been fine in 1979- even Herb Alpert released a disco album in 1979- by 1980 disco was on the way out in the USA.

@thereportersclinic I suggest you listen to this on a decent sound system. Even something as seemingly merely anodyne as Please Mr Postman is quite shockingly good when played properly. And, if you can get it, try the Carpenters SACD.
@roscoegino The solos and structure of Goodbye to Love have always reminded me of McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed (1970).
