Valeriy Maksymov emigrated to New Zealand in 2000, and since his arrival he has been actively following his own twin passions: establishing himself as a member of the viola section of the Christchurch Symphony and performing regularly as a singer. Valeriy holds masters degrees in singing and in violin/viola performance, and is a qualified teacher of both. He was a member of the State Opera and Ballet Theatre in his native Donetsk in the Ukraine, performing fifteen roles for the company including the title role in Eugene Onegin, Gryaznoy in Tzars Bride, Marcello in La Boheme, von Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Marullo in Rigoletto, Danilo in The Merry Widow, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly.
He made his NZ operatic debut with Canterbury Opera in 2001 as Schlemil in The Tales of Hoffman, and as Ping in Turandot later that year. Most recently, he performed as Nikitich in Boris Godunov in 2003, as Marullo in Rigoletto this year with the National Business Review NZ Opera, and for Canterbury Opera as Marchese di Calatrava in The Force of Destiny. Other roles for Canterbury Opera include Baron Douphol in La Traviata, Boris in The Birth of an Opera and as the Tutor in Count Ory.
Last program was Mozart Requiem, (K626) with Jubilate singers, May 2006; an opera The God Boy with Canterbury University; Bach St. Johns Passion (Jesus)(April 2007).
Concert engagements include recitals in Donetsk Philharmonic Hall and Conservatoire (1992-2000); International Music Festival 1998 (Kiev); recital in Germany (Cologne 1998); Concerts Programmes in Christchurch Music Centre and Art Centre 2000-2004); Concerts Programmes in Auckland and Hamilton (2002-2006 including Recital in Auckland Town Hall (Sept 2006).
