I always thought this version had more to do with Modesty Blaise, a female secret agent in a British comic strip and series of novels by Peter O'Donnell. I wonder if the creators were familiar with Blaise, and gave her a veneer of superhero for this movie.

DEFINITELY a nod to the 1903 spy novel "The Riddle of the Sands." In it, a sailing trip in the Frisian Islands uncovers a German plot to invade England. The writers were definitely savvy. Can't wait to watch the others and see what other nods they give to the literature of the period.

Haven't seen this since the 80s. I laughed at the mention of the Frisian Islands...a classic spy thriller from 1903, ,"The Riddle of the Sands" by Erskine Childers, is about a sailing expedition to the Frisian Islands that uncovers German military secrets. This must be a riff on that novel!

In my teens, I realized that if someone finds it necessary to tell you they're cool, then they're not cool. Same way with being hot. If you have to tell people you're hot, you're not hot. It's best to let your qualities speak for themselves, if at all possible.
