LETS GET VIENNA BY ULTRAVOX TO NUMBER 1 ON 11th APRIL 2010
MISSION STATEMENT
Join us today and lets all get VIENNA to it's rightful place so that history can show that this amazing record and video did in fact reach the very top of the UK singles charts, albeit almost thirty years after its first release.
BACKGROUND
In 1981 - almost thirty years ago - seminal synth-rock band Ultravox released the single 'Vienna' to rave reviews for it's epic sound, moody strings and those amazing two words of Midge Ure's- "Oh, Vienna!"
Unfortunately however, it seems there has always been time for injecting the odd bit of lunacy into the UK charts.
No surprise then when Joe Dolces Shaddap You Face reached the dizzy heights of Number One back in February 1981, staying there for three weeks, while Ultravox's classic Vienna suffered the worst fate imaginable, being kept down at Number 2. How could such a great song become a mere undercurrent while Joe Dolce seemingly caught the wave? Perhaps youre as bemused as I am.
With a memorable black-and-white video shot in Covent Garden and the Austrian city, the "Vienna" album was released in 1980, the title track was released as a single. On its fourth week in the chart, Ultravox's "Vienna" had gracefully climbed to the no.2 position. It seemed poised to replace John Lennon's much-loved (posthumous) hit "Woman" at the top in w/e 21st Feb 1981. But, when the chart was announced, it transpired that "Shaddup You Face" had shown the audacity to leap-frog Ultravox's beautifully crafted song, blocking its ascendancy to no.1. To make matters worse, both singles maintained their positions for three further weeks before "Vienna" fell to no. 4!
This is an injustice to the world of popular music.
Nowadays of course, we as members of the public have so much power over what enters the charts. No longer are we bound by what the record companies release on single to govern what we buy; We have the glorious download, meaning that we have the power to control the charts ourselves.
THE TASK
The proposal is that during the end of March 2010 we encourage as many people as possible to download Vienna from iTunes, Amazon, HMV, Play, etc AS LONG AS ITS A BRITISH BASED DOWNLOAD SITE (and it's legal of course). Downloading commences Sunday 4th April for ONE WEEK.
IMPORTANT: It is imperative that you download the AGREED VERSION from: The Very Best of Ultravox (Vienna Single Version). These details will be confirmed via the various groups and the Ultravox.org.uk site. If in doubt please dont hesitate to get in touch.
