utrophia: a network of groups and individuals
About Me:

http://www.utrophia.net

utrophia is a network of groups and individuals. it started in 2002 when we thought that something must be done to save a portion of south east london from music nights that we all felt were boring. we started playing new and experimental music with enough passion to potentially genuinely save humanity. putting on bands which people generally would say 'wow' to.

that beautiful venue got bought up by frank the yank, who tailored the area to be a playground from the young professionals of canary wharf. the beautiful old music hall has become an expensive crass poor taste night club which is a microcosm of why the world's in a mess. the dlr development brought in more crap chain stores and now greenwich markets, indoor and outdoor are under threat.

we moved to hackney to the 291 gallery and the network really evolved with amazing music and video art from everywhere.

our headquarters became the engine house in the skillion centre in greenwich. initially just bands would rehearse there, but then events started happening and people started wanting to realise projects there.

it became a central hub of incredible things for 4 years. It is where we dreamed up the CWM festivals, the marching band, the mobile clubbing and pillow fight clubs public interventions; played home to a forest of trees, a sonic pong, the world's largest bed and has generally been the focal point of homegrown genuine desires to save the world.

at the end of december 2007 the property developers slammed their concrete balls through our windows and we moved on to an old ice cream factory in deptford, london, on the same road as our beautiful cafe 'deptford properly' stood for one solitary year.

nearly two years on, the ice cream factory has played host to an array of amazing artists, projects, band, groups and individuals.

we reach out to everyone and offer large smiles that are born out of remembering that of all the many things in the world, money is the least precious.

here are some of the films from various things we have done.
