In this week's Friday Freakout, I'm yappin' about Brad Pitt's Marriage Promise, Silverman's Ugly Mark and Santorum's Bile - but not in that order!
We've seen a plethora of anti-gay messages come from the Republican primary campaign trail, so it was really no surprise when Santorum's Florida campaign manager said that gays make God vomit. It points to a narrative going on in a significant portion of this country that demonizes gay people, however, and so it's important to keep airing these terrible words.
It is equally important to connect how the presidential campaign ties into the fight against marriage discrimination. This is a very familiar civil rights battle, often likened to the black civil rights movement in the 1960s. And yet, when Brad Pitt mentioned this week that he might not be able to wait to get married any longer, everyone seemed sympathetic. While we truly appreciate and respect the Jolie-Pitts for their seven year commitment to wait for complete marriage equality, we ask them not to abandon us just yet. Plenty of us have children that want us to get married, and many more simply want to marry the person they live. Stick with us!
And if you needed a bit of a reminder, look no further than the 2010 interview with Sarah Silverman where she compared getting married despite marriage discrimination to joining a country club in the '60s that didn't allow blacks or Jews as members. Fight for us, and we will be forever grateful!

I recently watched "Moneyball," and found the following quote very relevant: "Adapt or die."
SOPA/PIPA is all about the old media guard elite holding on to the past. It's about laziness. It's about a lack of desire - or fear - to innovate.
And you know what? Many of the "mainstream" LGBT organizations are doing the exact same things as the SOPA/PIPA supporters: holding on to the vestiges of the past without adapting to the current state of the world.
Adapt or die, GLAAD. Adapt or die, HRC. Adapt or die, gay media. Adapt or die, mainstream media.
Adapt or die. We all have to, so let's do it now!

I was completely and utterly shocked when I head that a Department of Justice lawyer in Canada argued that some gay marriage licenses issued to non-Canadians were actually not legal because their home countries did not legally recognize gay marriage.
Effectively, this DoJ lawyer dissolved thousands of gay marriages for people who's home countries did not recognize them. This position came about after a lesbian couple, married in Canada in 2005, wanted to get divorced. The government's lawyer in the case argued that their marriage wasn't even legal since they couldn't get married in their home country - so there was no relationship to divorce.
The world, thankfully, freaked out, and the Canadian government has backtracked, saying that they will work on an amendment to the Civil Marriage Act that ensures the legality of all gay marriages performed in Canada, regardless of the couples' home country laws.
There have been conflicting views on the "truth" of this story, but the government itself has acknowledged that they were indeed of the position that these marriages weren't valid - and now, with all the pressure, are going to reverse that position.
Hurray for intense worldwide firestorms that actually affect change!
