Beethoven endured a tempestuous social and love life, always seeming to be in love with someone who he could not give himself to, or more often, someone who could not give herself to him, whether family forbid it or the lady in question was already previously engaged or married. This affected Beethoven so deeply that it inspired some of the most moving love letters that I've ever read - his mysterious Immortal Beloved letters in particular, for the recipient is still unknown to this day.
On top of this, the master composer suffered his entire adult life from deafness! First noticing effects around the age of 26-27, only to get progressively worse year after year until eventually becoming completely deaf. Imagine a man with such a deep love for music only to suffer the slow, daily realization of losing his hearing. Losing the ability to hear the beautiful music he writes. Imagine the affect this had on him. You don't even have to imagine, just listen to his music. One can, without question, feel the pain in Beethoven's music, the passion, the love, the loss of love, the tragedy, the joy; his ever so turbulent life jotted down in notes to create stormy piano sonatas or violent symphonies - it's all there. As Beethoven would say, "from the heart, to the heart."
