The Royal Netherlands Army was raised on 9 January 1814, but its origins date back to 1572, when the so-called Staatse Leger was raised. Therefore, The Netherlands is regarded to be one of the countries that have maintained the oldest standing army, dating back to the 16th century. This army of the Dutch Republic was one of the less organized, and not very-well trained armies of the seventeenth and early eighteenth century, and saw actions in the Eighty Year's War, the Dano-Swedish War 1658-1660, the Franco-Dutch War, the Nine Years War, the War of Spanish Succession, the War of Austrian Succession, and the French Revolutionary Wars until the French conquered the Netherlands in early 1795. The Staatse Leger was replaced by the army of the Batavian Republic in 1795 which in its turn was replaced by the army of the Kingdom of Holland in 1806. It fought alongside the French in the Anglo-Russian Invasion of Holland in 1799 and several campaigns in Germany, Austria and Spain between 1800 and 1810. Most notable were the engagements of the Horse Artillery Korps Rijdende Artillerie at the battle of Friedland in 1807, the capture of the city of Stralsund in 1807 and 1809 and the participation of the Dutch Brigade in the Peninsular War between 1808 and 1810. The independent army was disbanded in 1810 when Napoleon decided to 'reunite' Holland into France (La Hollande est reunie à l'Empire). The army units became part of the Grande Armée. The present day 126e Régiment d'infanterie has Dutch origins. Dutch army elements participated in the French invasion of Russia in 1812. Most notable were the actions of the pontonniers company under captain Benthien at the Berezina river (Battle of Berezina). Since 1814 (elements of) the army have been involved in several military conflicts (Waterloo campaign 1815, several colonial wars 1825-1925, the Belgian Revolution 1830-1832, the Second World War 1940-1945, the Indonesian War of Independence 1945-1949, and the Nieuw-Guinea insurgency 1960-1962). Nowadays the army concentrates on peace-keeping and peace-enforcing operations and has been involved in several operations (in Lebanon between 1979-1985, and the former Yougoslavia (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, and Kosovo) 1991-present, but also in Cambodja 1992-1994, Haiti 1995-1996, Cyprus 1998-1999, Eritrea and Ethiopia 2001, and most recent in Iraq 2003-2005, Afghanistan 2002-2010, and Chad 2008-2009).

the My Lai massacre where the US army in Vietnam slaughtered 500 unarmed civilians, many women and children.
Some victims were sexually abused, beaten, tortured, maimed and mutilated.
Three U.S. servicemen who made an effort to halt the massacre and protect the wounded were sharply criticized by US Congressmen, received hate mail, death threats and mutilated animals on their doorsteps. Only 30 years after the event were their efforts honored.
American media first claimed 100 had been killed in a fierce fire fight.

Words and music by Jim Hinde, 1990
Do you feel a draft? Let's not go down THAT road again!
This video, of course, is really just to advertise the REAL song and singer, which you can see here http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=7hv_DwL...
Here are the lyrics and the chords as I hear them. But, really, go see Jim's vid.
G Well there's a story I heard and I'm telling it to you, About Joe and Maggie, living on the Bayou. C Joe came home after working one day, In G time to find his baby boy carried away. D7 Joe said, "Maggie, something terrible's been done. C Sam the Alligator's went and eaten our son". D7 Maggie said, "Joe, we'll make love tonight And you'll C have another baby boy to make it all G right".
As certain as the seasons are gonna come and go, Maggie birthed a son, just like she'd promised Joe. But one afternoon Joe was fishing off the pier When up lunged Sam and grabbed his baby dear. Joe said, "Maggie, I've lost our new son Sam the Alligator's scored another one". Maggie said, "Joe, we'll make love tonight And you'll have another baby boy to make it all right.
But Joe said, D7 "Working all day and making love all night C Just to feed Sam the Alligator, don't seem right. D7 Keep feeding Sam your sweetheart dears And C all you're gonna have is 'crocodile G tears'".
So they moved to the city and started up again. This time Maggie went and gave Joe twins. Joe was so happy that he damn near cried, And he loved those boys until the day that he died. Joe said, "Maggie, my death wish of you Is 'never take my boys near the old Bayou.'" Maggie said, "Joe, as sure as night and day, Ain't no alligator gonna take our sons away.
Because... "Working all day and making love all night Just to feed Sam the Alligator, don't seem right. Keep feeding Sam your sweetheart dears And all you're gonna have is 'crocodile tears'".
Now if the story ended there, that would be fine, But those two boys grew up and had to "walk the line." One went to college, and the other, Viet Nam, And he got gobbled up by that "gator" Uncle Sam. The General said, "Maggie, we're sorry 'bout your son But the war's still raging...Could we have the other one?" Maggie said, "General, here's exactly what you do... Take your own sons 'fishing' on your old Bayou."
Because... "Working all day and making love all night Just to feed Sam the Alligator, don't seem right. Keep feeding Sam your sweetheart dears And all you're gonna have is 'crocodile tears'".
So the lesson of the story I'm trying to share with you is "There's a mess of alligators in a bunch of different bayous." When the 'War-Lord' politicians tell your sons to go, You can always stand up and just say, "NO!" When the cynics tell you, "You'll never change a thing," Try to find a reason in the words that I sing. When you agree with the message of the song, I'd kindly appreciate it if you'd sing a G long.
Because... D7 "Working all day and making love all night Just to feed Sam the Alligator, don't seem right. Keep feeding Sam your sweetheart dears And all you're gonna have is 'crocodile tears'." ***********************************************
Please write and email the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, asking for the investigation and prosecution of George W Bush for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes:

EXAMPLE
Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo
Dear Sir;
I note that your mandate "is to conduct investigations and prosecutions of crimes that fall within the jurisdiction of the Court, that is, the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes."
This is a perfect description of the actions of American President George W. Bush. As an American citizen appalled at the illegal invasion and terrorizing of Iraq, the President-sponsored torture, the "Constitution-free" prisons in which citizens of various nationalities are brutalized and punished without trial, the construction of such camps within the USA and around the world, the initiation of war in Pakistan and in Iran, and the genocide now being carried out in the Middle East I appeal to you and to your office to investigate and prosecute George W. Bush for the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Most sincerely, and with respect, (Shas)
