US economic assistance to Egypt through the United States Agency for International Development has totaled more than $28 billion since 1975.
OVERVIEW
USAID/Egypts goal is the development of a globally competitive economy that benefits Egyptians equitably. Programs aim to create private sector jobs and sustain human and natural resources by focusing on:
•Economic Growth (including environment and antiquities)
•Infrastructure (including water and wastewater, electric power, and telecommunications)
•Education (including basic and higher education)
•Health (including family planning and infectious disease surveillance and response)
•Democracy and Governance (including administration of justice and citizen participation)
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
During the past 30 years, USAID has made significant contributions to assist the Egyptian Government to improve the quality of life for Egyptian citizens. Concrete examples include: 860,000 new telephone lines serving approximately five million people; access to electricity for 99 percent of all 70 million Egyptians; access to clean water for 98 percent of all Egyptians; a 81 percent reduction in the infant mortality rate; eradication of polio; funding the construction of 2,400 new schools; and assistance to microfinance institutions resulting in loans to 2.5 million small and micro-entrepreneurs.
