Documentaries

The Media Centre produces video documentaries that illustrate how the research of the UN University brings about positive change on the ground. The documentaries also explore and explain complex social, economic and environmental problems as well as sharing knowledge on the solutions to these problems.

These award winning documentaries are shared online, via DVD and are screened at film festivals across the globe.

Video Series: Stories for Our World 2.0 Webzine

The Our World 2.0 (http://ourworld.unu.edu) web magazine focuses on climate change, biodiversity, peak oil and food security at a time we are witnessing a convergence of these issues. It presents solutions to these problems from around the globe.

Launched in 2008, the webzine presents the research outcomes of the UN University together with expert commentary in the form of short articles and video briefs. It also functions as a open platform for others to publish their work and to participate in an interactive dialogue on pressing global issues of concern to the United Nations, member states and the public at large.

Interview Series: Knowledge Management (K* Star)

Every year, billions of dollars are spent worldwide advancing knowledge in areas of public interest ranging from health and the environment to education and agriculture. Yet much of the information generated fails to reach many of those who could benefit -- from policy makers to the general public.

How to better mobilize knowledge and maximize its usefulness was the focus of 60 experts from 20 countries and spanning a score of disciplines who came together at conference convened by the United Nations University -- Institute for Water, Environment and Health to a meeting in Hamilton, Canada April 24-28.

Interview Series: Climate Change

This series includes interviews with some of the leading scientists, academics and thought leaders working in the area of climate change. These interviews normally take place in and around events organized by the UN University, designed to highlight key issues of relevance to policy-makers.

Video Series: Stories from the Mountains of Central Asia

Series of videos on sustainable land management in the Central Mountains of Central Asia that describe the work of the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security, based in Bonn, Germany. The videos in this series show the work of UNU researchers involved in the PALM project (http://www.ehs.unu.edu/palm/). It aims to address the interlinked problems of land degradation and poverty within one of Central Asia's crucial fresh water sources and biodiversity hotspots.

The project is executed by the Committee on Environment Protection in Tajikistan and National Center for Mountain Regions Development in Kyrgyzstan with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and other donors.

Video Series: Biodiversity

Biodiversity is a central theme of the UN University's work and several institutes have projects in this area. This video series presents some of the main biodiversity related projects of the University and includes interviews with some of the world's leading biodiversity specialists.

Video Series: Indigenous perspectives of climate change

A series of Indigenous assessments of climate change to promote effective engagement of Indigenous people in the climate change processes at all relevant levels. In particular, providing a basis for effective Indigenous participation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) processes and other national and international climate change processes, and incorporate Indigenous knowledge into the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

These UNU video briefs are a contribution to the IPCCA and were presented at the Indigenous Peoples Global Summit on Climate Change in Alaska in 20-24 April 2009. In December 2009, they were screened as a side event at the UNFCCC negotiations in Copenhagen.
