Where in capitalism do the workers' exercise direct control? All management and decisions in capitalism are made by big business and corporate elites who set a company's policies independent of what the public think. Yes, if it is profitable to produce what the public want then they will do it... but not everything the public needs is profitable, like education which is one example.

Moreover, it the corporations also exercise control over the government also... So, from my point of view it makes little difference if power is in the hands of the owners of corporations or in the hands of the government. It is the workers' and people which Socialism seeks to empower... not any elite group.
