Actually if you are raising the number to the 2nd power it will make a negative number positive. IN other words it doesn't really matter what order your x1 and x2 are in. For example if the coordinate are (1,1) and (1,2) the distance formula would be the square root of (1-1) squared +( 1-2) squ...
