To start using Windows, first open Parallels Desktop by clicking its icon in the "Dock" or opening it from the "Applications" folder. Let us have a look at what tools of the guest operating system are available in the "Like a Mac" option. A "Windows 7 Applications" icon appears in the "Dock". Clicking it opens a menu of all of your Windows programs. Just click a program to launch it. Or, to open the Windows Start menu, click the Parallels icon in the menubar and choose "Windows Start Menu". Then click any program to launch it. You can place any Windows program in the Mac "Dock" for easy access, just as you do with Mac applications. Clicking the Parallels icon in the menubar also gives you access to the settings of all devices connected to the Windows virtual machine, including USB devices, CD drives, sound and network adapters. You access these other settings by holding down the "Option" (or "Alt") key when you click on the Parallels icon in the Mac menu bar. While using Windows, you can associate file types with either Mac applications or Windows programs. You can do this by choosing a particular application in the "Open With" contextual menu in the Mac Finder for a document, or in the "Open with" right-click menu in Windows Explorer. The most popular way to work with Windows is "Coherence". This view mode does not show the Windows desktop; but as you can see, it shows Windows applications running directly on the Mac desktop, just like they were made for your Mac. If you chose to install Windows like a Mac, it would start in "Coherence" by default. An alternative way to use Parallels Desktop is called "window mode." To switch to window mode, click the Parallels icon in the menu bar and select "Exit Coherence". Window mode shows the Windows desktop inside a Mac window. Yet a third way to use Parallels Desktop is "Full Screen mode." In this mode, Windows fills the entire screen, and the Mac desktop is not seen at all. To switch from window mode to full screen mode, choose "Enter Full Screen" from the "View" menu. If you are using OS X Lion, you can run Windows in full screen mode and dedicate a separate desktop to it using "Mission Control". Then you can easily switch quickly between Mac OS and full screen Windows. When you're finished working in Windows, there are several ways to stop using it. They are: - Suspend. Suspending Windows freezes all running Windows programs and settings in their current state. The next time you start Windows or open a Windows program, you resume your progress from exactly where you left off. - Pause. You can temporarily pause Windows and free your computer's resources, such as RAM and processor cycles, to be used by your Mac applications. Pausing is the quickest way to stop and then resume using Windows. - Shut Down. Shutting down Windows in Parallels Desktop is just like shutting down Windows on a PC. All Windows programs close, giving you the opportunity to save your progress, if necessary, and Windows stops running. - Stop. Stopping Windows is like abruptly turning off or unplugging a Windows PC. No changes are saved in open programs, so stopping Windows should only be used rarely, when troubleshooting or when you're absolutely certain you don't need to save your progress.
