For those that are interested or confused to who and what Rromane are;

It is believed the Rromane (also referred to by outsiders as Tsigane / Ciganos / Gypsy / Gitano) left India shortly after 1000ad due to Islamic invasion into India by Muslim Turks from Aghanistan.
The Rromane are believed to have been the Indian militia made up of mostly Rajputs, Jats and Banjara. Due to defeat they swiftly made their way to what is now Turkey & Armenia either as captured soldiers enlisted into the Turkish army or as refugees fleeing along the silk trade routes. Turkey at the time was called Anatolia and was a part of the Greek speaking Byzantine Empire. Armenia was just to the northeast of Anatolia and also became target for invading Turk armies in the name of Islam. Armenia fell and Anatolia became the home for hundreds of thousands of Armenian refugees. The area in Anatolia known as Cilicia had so many Armenians that it even became known as "Little Armenia". Whether the Rromane were in parts of Anatolia that became overrun with Armenians or whether the Rromane came into Anatolia via Armenians we do not know but we know the Rromane lived in these lands for a considerable period of time due to a number of words absorbed from the Greek and Armenian languages. We can see that they also must have learned of Christianity from the early Armenian or Greek church by certain words and beliefs seen today.
They entered into Europe at around 1300ad which was about the time Anatolia eventually fell to the invading Muslim Turks.

Once in Europe most lived in the Balkans though a second group slit away and traveled up through Hungary and into the Holy Roman Empire of Germany. This second group made up the Rromane who refer to themselves as Sinte. A third group then split from the second and traveled across through The Netherlands and Belgium and then down into Spain where they became respected for their music. Rromane musicians were sent from Spain to the King of Scotland and then onto Scandinavia. This third group makes up the Rromane who call themselves "Kale".
These are the three branches we see today; The Rromane (inc. Romanichal / Romanishel & Rroma), the Sinte (inc. Manouche) & The Kale / Kaale / Cale

The purer dialects of Rromani is still about 80% Indian of mostly Rajasthani, Panjabi, Sanskrit & Indian Persian. The rest of the language is made up of Greek and Armenian which was picked up during their long stay in Anatolia or later additional European words.

Most Romane in the world do not speak or read and write in the English language and unfortunetely there is alot of stuff posted on the internet by English speaking non-Rromane and Rromane wannabes trying to either romanticize what they would like the Romane to be or there in much discrimination from eastern European racism. Something to make note at this point is that Rromane do not belly dance. If anyone of any Romani blood does then it is not that they are doing a Romani dance. The many videos on Youtube of white western housewives belly dancing and calling it Romani / Gypsy is very insulting as the title is nothing less than a lie.

The word 'Gypsy' was originally associated with the Rromane as the European knowledge of the world back then was not as great so they thought they were Egyptian due to their brown skin and eastern appearance. The word Gypsy is actually a short form of the word Egyptian.
Nowadays the word gipsy has become associated with most nomadic groups of the world which causes much problrm with people understanding the true identity of the Rromane. Gypsy is actually an insultive term as we are of Indian decent and not Egyptian. Rromani has no Egyptian or Arabic loan words within it.

Religion wise Romane are now mostly Christian but some old Indian superstition or signs of old Hinduism does still exist. Recently there was a large Christian revival amongst the Romani people of Europe and the United States.

Sometimes it is written that the Romane are called Roma. The word Roma translates into English as 'Roms' as 'a' on the end of a word makes it plural in Romani grammar. Roms (Roma) are only a branch of Romane so it is wrong to refer to them all as Roms (Roma).

THE ROMANE / ROMANI (inc. ROMA) HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ROMANIA OR THE ROMANS FROM ITALY. THE WORDS ARE JUST COINCIDENTALLY SIMILAR.

The word 'flemenc' is an old Spanish word associated with Rromane. Much of the arm movements, stamping of feet and the 12 beat in flamenco go all the way back to India. Flamenco is also possibly believed to have some influence from music of people coming into Spain from North Africa as Romane (Gitanos) of Spain would have come into contact with these.
Flamenco is only performed amongst Spanish & Portugese Romane (more commonly called Gitanos & Ciganos or in their own language 'Kale' which is a Romani word meaning 'blacks')

A famous sportsman who is of Romani blood is the international footballer Ricardo Quaresma who plays for Portugal and FC Porto
