Are you prepared to share your knowledge and insights discussing further your proposition?
Brother, the shahada says " la elah ella Allah "
la=no , elah=God . ella=but , Allah=Allah
No God But Allah !
If elah = Allah , then it would be not reasonable to say : no god but god !
In Arabic the words elah and Allah are totally different phonetically
God asks you a question concerning His name, do you know the answer? God says he has a name do you know any named along with Him.
19:65 Rabbu alssamawati waal-ardiwama baynahuma faoAAbudhu waistabirliAAibadatihi hal taAAlamu lahu samiyyan
Would you dispute God's name with God?
• 7:71 Qala qad waqaAAa AAalaykum minrabbikum rijsun waghadabun atujadiloonanee fee asma-insammaytumooha antum waabaokum manazzala Allahu biha min sultanin faintathirooinnee maAAakum mina almuntathireena
He said: "Punishment and wrath have already come upon you from your Lord: dispute ye with me over names which ye have devised - ye and your fathers,- without authority from Allah? then wait: I am amongst you, also waiting."
If no rebuke then it is permissible to call God by the Biblical name YHWH just as it is permissible to call individuals by their biblical names Adam, Ibraheem, Ismael, Mariam etc.
Mathew's question " Once again, this simply proves to me that there is no eternal unique proper noun name for God, as this would be minor shirk. Only God in his essence is unique and eternal. The Qur'an says, God taught Adam the names of everything (2.31), so naming things is a human activity. How could the Almighty have only one unique name in all the Universe?"
The answer is very simple. Since we can agree that only God in His essence is Eternal so Allah in His essence is Eternal. Let me explain it with a question; who is Eternal Al-Samad? Answer Allah. As God's essence is Eternal there will always be Allah. Allah is Eternal. Is anyone saying Allah is not Eternal? No
Mathew says:
"You are right, there is no rebuke in the Qur'an against using the name YHWH for God. Once again, this simply proves to me that there is no eternal unique proper noun name for God, as this would be minor shirk. Only God in his essence is unique and eternal. The Qur'an says, God taught Adam the names of everything (2.31), so naming things is a human activity. How could the Almighty have only one unique name in all the Universe? Consider the sun. People call the sun by many names, but everyone knows that there is only one sun, and the sun itself doesn't change based on what people have named it. In fact, a person can just point to the sky to invoke the sun. If the sun is independent of man's naming conventions, the how much more the Owner of the sun?"
I have to address this reply point by point for the interest of readers and contributors.
Mathew admits "You are right, there is no rebuke in the Qur'an against using the name YHWH for God."
meethinker, I think therefore I am. I thank you for your shared thoughts. Thoughts with knowledge, truth and sincerity are nuggets of wisdom.
First question: have you researched, studied the subject the word Allah, its history, etymology, meaning and significance to Islam and to pre Islamic societies?
I ask because I want to know that what you share with us are not of the 'copy and paste variety' but are from your own cognition and conviction suppported with evidence and facts.
In all my dialogues I mean not to offend even if sometimes I appear to come across as too direct.
Please be patient with us and persist in sharing your valued insights and perspectives. And May Allah reward you
59:22 He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
59:23 He is Allah , other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
59:24 He is Allah , the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
