The truth is that hunting is the only thing controlling deer populations in this country. Deer vehicle accidents kill about 200 people a year in the United States and send 25,000 to emergency rooms. And that's with hunters killing 8 - 10 million whitetails annually. Just imagine how many "more" deer vehicle accidents there would be if hunters weren't harvesting 8 - 10 million, out of a nationwide herd of 32 million, whitetails annually?

More than 50 percent of deer killed by hunters each year are does. Many states use "earn-a-buck" programs, special doe tags and other methods to reduce deer populations. Deer birth control costs $500 - $1,000 per deer, according to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Multiply that by the 10 million whitetails killed annually and you get a price tag of $5 - $10 billion. There is no known relationship between CWD and any other transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of animals or people, a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention failed to find any relationship. Several epidemiologic studies provide evidence that, to date, CWD has not been transmitted to humans. There has never been an instance of people contracting a CWD-related disease from butchering or eating venison. Additionally, routine surveillance has not shown any increase in the incidence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in Colorado or Wyoming.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, a student is more than twice as likely to be assualted or killed in an urban school (where hunting participation is the lowest) than in rural schools (where hunting participation is the highest). No, students are not showing up at schools with their deer rifles looking to kill people. When lethal violence at schools does occur, it is usually the result of inner-city gang violence, not youth hunters. Kids who learn to hunt attain a healthy respect for firearms.
