About Me:
This is the first book in the Tripods Trilogy series(The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead and The Pool of Fire) written by John Christopher and was the basis for a BBC TV series. The White Mountains is set in a future at least a hundred years after the Tripods took over. These three-legged machines tower over trees and buildings, marching around the land and even across the sea on their long, articulated legs. They might be intelligent robots or they might be vehicles containing some unseen alien(s) - their nature is one of the mysteries of the series. They are rumored to hunt and enslave humans, but for the most part, they seem content just to remain in control of a pacified humankind. In this world high technology is gone and life resembles that of the mid 1800s but minus most of the technological achievements of that period such as electricity, steam/electric engines, trains, steam ships, light bulbs(no gas either), and weapons such as guns or explosives.
They control man through the most chilling feature of this future world: the Capping. A grand coming-of-age ceremony and festival(like a Bar Mitzvah or Quinceañera) in their fourteenth year, all humans are gathered up by the Tripods, their heads shaved, and a spider web patterned cap of metal wiring/circuitry is embedded on the top of their scalp. After Capping, a child is then considered a young adult. After Capping, a child has become something other than what they were, something controlled, something less. A capped person no longer questions why or what the tripods are. They no longer desire to learn what man was before or the things they used.
13-year-old Will Parker lives a normal life in a small village in what was called Southern England. He knows hell be capped next year with his cousin Henry. Life is good. Then his older friend Jack is capped and he changes dramatically. Jack no longer questions anything now Not like he did before Later a stranger comes to town and befriends Will and tells him things he never thought of. Strange things of the past before the Tripods came Things to make him think twice about staying around to be capped next year.
