Honestly, I think his vocals for most tool songs are mid-range, the vocals for APC are by far more challenging because he reaches octaves (especially on the first apc album) that he had not hit with tool previously. He seemed to do well with most of them during the 2011 apc tour....

I thought just about every glam metal band did that. That said, I don't think Def Leppard was anything like glam metal. They were too unique sounding to be considered that, plus their use of melody and meaningful lyrics counter acted a lot of that stuff too.
