I always thought he reminded me of Alan Price, and Georgie Fame, maybe it was just the piano. Maybe Townshend sounds like Gary?, whatever you say about him, he has outlasted all these and many other gifted musicians, and even PH's early music doesn't sound dated, whether performed in 1967 or 2010.
