Torchlight was formed in 1986 on the Ben Lippen campus when it was located in Asheville, NC. Three students and a faculty member felt that Christians should make use of all styles of music to glorify Jesus, including rock music. In 1986 they banded together and "Torchlight" was born. The members of the band began to write and arrange original songs with a light rock style which reflected their own Christian experience and spiritual goals. They put on concerts there on the old campus for the purpose of encouraging students to make a strong stand for Jesus.

When Ben Lippen moved to Columbia, SC in 1988, Torchlight continued to write and put on concerts. Though the members of the band have changed throughout the years, its purpose remains the same: 1) to lift up Jesus Christ, and 2) to challenge themselves and others to live for Him.
