What fixed value capacitor did you use in the tuning circuit? To copy that it would be a lot easier if I knew the number of winds on the coil and the capacitance in the circuit. Looks like it has some regeneration. Any chance we could have information about the circuit please?

They have VERY old capacitors which fail and one in particular when it fails will destroy the output tube by putting positive bias on the grid of the valve / tube. That radio badly needs a bandspread capacitor added in parallel with the main tuning cap. Also, you would find it easier to tune with slightly less regeneration.
