Dear Tony - When evaluating a system , the entire system has to be reevaluated. That includes both handling and the stunning method. The large CO2 machines have improved group handling. Some discomfort in CO2 may be a reasonable tradeoff to get better handling. However, fi the gas is so aversive that the pigs try to escape, that is not acceptable. This would be a trade off that would be detrimental to overall animal welfare. There are generic differences in how pigs react to CO2. The reactions vary from very mild to escape reactions that are not acceptable.
