Some background info on my writing and piano / blues harp playing:
WRITING: Author of "Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer" and "Hunting, Gathering, & Videogames." For book descriptions and reviews of each, click on the books' pictures (at the bottom of this channel description, under the word "Albums")
KEYBOARDS: Making my living as a keyboardist was my career goal up until I had my first child in 1988, at which point I discovered that my pursuit of being a professional musician was incompatible with being an involved and responsible parent. (Especially because I was making very little money at the time from music: most of my income came from waiting tables.) My book "Hunting, Gathering, & Videogames" -- which covers the questions "Why do we HAVE to work?" and "What is the measure of 'success'?" -- largely came from my transition from my career as a musician (or at least a wannabe musician) to my search for a career that was family-compatible yet not personally stifling.
Nowadays, I play piano only for my kids' school events and friends' weddings--although YouTube has now given me a brand-new reason to start practicing again.
BLUES HARP: I picked up the harmonica in the early 1990s, once I started working two jobs and had no time to practice piano at home anymore. Almost all my practicing was done on the streets of Manhattan while walking back & forth from my subway stops to work. Once my company moved out of Manhattan a few years ago, I pretty much stopped practicing--although again, thanks to YouTube, I have an incentive to pick it up again.
The majority of my blues harp instruction, so far, has come from listening to Sonny Boy Williamson's "Let's Keep It to Ourselves" record. Once my kids get older, I look forward to putting in some serious hours of practice, starting with learning from the recordings of Little Walter, Big Walter, Adam Gussow, and many of the great harmonica players I've watched here on YouTube.
